From Dry Land to Green Fields: A Farmer’s Journey with CAMPROSAM

Location: Kedjom Keku Village, North West Cameroon

Beneficiary: Vukumitsi Vincent, smallholder farmer

Project Focus: Solar-powered borehole irrigation and improved farming practices

In the remote village of Kedjom Keku, access to reliable water sources for farming was a long-standing challenge. Rainfed agriculture dominated the region, leaving farmers vulnerable to unpredictable weather and poor harvests. Vukumitsi Vincent , a father of five, relied on seasonal rains to grow beans and maize — often struggling to feed his family or sell surplus crops.

In 2023, CAMPROSAM installed a solar-powered borehole pump in Kedjom Keku village as part of its Sustainable Agriculture and Water Resource Development initiative. Alongside this, Vincent received training in water-efficient irrigation techniques and was introduced to climate-resilient crop varieties developed by the project’s research team.

Impact

  • Reliable Year-Round Water Supply: The borehole now provides consistent irrigation for Vincent’s crops, even during dry months.

  • Increased Yield: His maize yield tripled within the first season after switching to improved seed varieties and drip irrigation.

  • Household Income Growth: With surplus harvests, Vincent now sells produce in the local market, increasing his monthly income by 60%.

  • Community Leadership: He also trains other farmers, sharing knowledge and encouraging sustainable practices across Kedjom Keku.

Quote from Vincent

"Before CAMPROSAM, I used to pray for rain. Now, I plan for harvests. My children eat better, and we even saved enough to start building a new house."
